Ideon Technologies Inc. is a world pioneer in the application of cosmic-ray muon tomography, based in Richmond, British Columbia, on the beautiful west coast of Canada. Our discovery platform integrates proprietary detectors, imaging systems, inversion technologies, and artificial intelligence to provide x-ray-like visibility up to 1 km beneath the Earth’s surface. By detecting subsurface muons and transforming the data into reliable geophysical surveys and 3D density maps, we help geologists identify new mineral and metal deposits with precision and confidence. Our innovative technology has been proven in a range of other geotechnical/subsurface applications as well. 

The role
We are seeking a geophysicist to take a leading role in building out our capabilities for muon tomography projects, geophysical inversion and targeting technologies, and multi-dataset analyses and machine learning:

Muon tomography applications
As Geophysics and AI Lead, you will be a leading technical proponent for muon tomography. Alongside the CTO and the VP, Product, you will play a definitive role in bringing client projects to fruition, beginning with clarifying customer goals and desired outcomes, through modeling and survey design, to deployment and data acquisition, processing, and finally to delivering geoscience results and impactful customer outcomes. You understand the intricacies of muon tomography, geology and mineral exploration and can interact proficiently with technical teams in client organizations, at conferences and workshops, and in published literature.

Inversion, product ownership and roadmap
Your goal will be to establish quantitatively what can be achieved using muon tomography, including in combination with other data streams. Equipped with a sound mathematical grounding, you will translate muon tomography detector data and other geophysical inputs to geoscience information content, using standard and novel data inversion methods. This involves understanding market requirements and developing frameworks and tools to aid in application assessment, survey design, implementation through to guiding product development for Ideon. The modelling and assessment tools you develop in consultation with our VP, Product will allow us to make informed customer engagement and market growth decisions.

Multi-dataset analyses and machine learning
Leveraging the datasets acquired from projects as well as publicly available data, you will take a lead role in developing artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to combine, make sense of and leverage disparate geoscientific datasets. This work will comprise prospectivity analyses and development of new data services, including exploration program design and optimized drilling patterns to maximize discovery rates and minimize exploration costs. You bring a sound understanding of the suite of available geophysical and geological data and associated software tools, strong numerical programming capabilities, mathematical expertise, and understanding of state-of-the-art ML/AI approaches.  You have a strong track-record of turning your technical capabilities into world-leading software that finds new insights in data – your difference is that you have the human relationship skills to quickly build trust, respect and understanding as the foundation for transformational outcomes.

General Qualifications
Beyond the capabilities outlined above, your credentials should include an advanced science, math, or engineering degree (preferably in geophysics or related disciplines) and P.Geo. or other relevant professional designation. We’ll be looking for a proven track record of excellence, as well as strong communication skills for engaging customers, team members, and the wider market. You will also bring the desire to play a vital role in shaping the growth of a Canadian start-up, working on leading-edge technologies, focused on delivering great customer outcomes.   

Specific Qualifications

  • Software programming languages: C++ (intermediate), Python (intermediate, expert preferred), Fortran (basic).
  • Software packages: demonstrated capability in at least some of Numpy (required) and Scipy, Scikit, Pandas, Matplotlib (optional).
  • Operating environments: Linux (required), AWS and other cloud platforms (beneficial).
  • Geophysics: experience analyzing potential fields data (almost required), experience with inversion of multiple types of geophysical data (almost required), and strong demonstrated understanding of geophysical methods, including tradeoffs and analysis / inversion methodologies. (‘Almost required’ = if applicant does not have direct experience with a variety of geophysics data, they should be able to demonstrate a high level of understanding and an ability to get up to speed rapidly.)

Job Requirements
The position is based in Richmond, BC (Greater Vancouver) and will require some travel.
