Ideon Technologies Inc. (www.ideon.ai) is a world pioneer in the application of cosmic-ray muon tomography, based in Richmond, British Columbia, on the beautiful west coast of Canada. Our discovery platform integrates proprietary detectors, imaging systems, inversion technologies, and artificial intelligence techniques to provide x-ray-like visibility up to 1 km beneath the Earth’s surface. By detecting subsurface muons and transforming the data into reliable geophysical surveys and 3D density maps, we help geologists identify new mineral and metal deposits with precision and confidence. Our innovative technology has been proven in a range of other geotechnical/subsurface applications as well.

The role
We are seeking a creative and curious mechanical engineer/technologist to develop and test the mechanical aspects of the world’s first 3D density-imaging muon tomography system to be deployed down industry-standard boreholes. Working under the guidance of the senior mechanical engineer, you will create a robust mechanical enclosure design that can meet the challenging conditions of underground deployment. Successful completion of this goal will allow the company to complete field trials with this compact borehole detector and enter commercial use. Thereafter, we envision future iterations of the design to improve ease of use and field readiness, and then working towards a next-generation system for smaller boreholes. Experience in oil & gas or mining and especially downhole instrumentation would be a great asset. The successful applicant will also be expected to take on a leading role in the mechanical aspects of field operations.

In this context, your responsibilities will include:

  • computer-aided design and simulation (Ansys, AutoCAD Fusion, Solidworks, and similar software)
  • designing and fast prototyping of internal sensor assembly and external housing components
  • leading assembly activities
  • specifying and coordinating environmental testing procedures (pressure, temperature requirements) for assembled housings
  • working closely with the R & D team to inform design decisions for manufacturability, robustness, ease of assembly and other ongoing product improvements
  • leading deployment of downhole systems in field trials, and beyond
  • transitioning into a leadership role for design and manufacturing of Ideon’s next-generation detector

Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this opportunity is highly motivated, innovative, keen to work ‘outside the cubicle’, and able to apply critical-thinking skills on the fly. We’d love you to bring a proven track record for making good decisions and producing quality designs in a competitive and fast-paced environment. As mentioned above, experience in the oil & gas or mining industries and especially with downhole instrumentation would be a great asset. You should have a broad awareness of how deployment down a borehole works, and you should have the know-how to support that activity with good instrument design and also by getting directly involved in the deployment activities. You have earned a degree or diploma in engineering and have demonstrated aptitude for CAD, 3D printing, CNC, and engineering modeling processes (e.g. finite element analysis, stress analysis, etc.). And while this position is ideally suited for someone with experience, if you’re a more junior candidate who has these attributes, please apply and convince us why you’d be a good fit.

What we offer
This is an opportunity to work with a dynamic technology start-up and spin-off from TRIUMF (Canada’s national particle accelerator laboratory) at one of the most exciting moments in its journey to commercialization. You will be working together with company founders and technical experts to advance a ground-breaking solution that will generate significant economic and environmental benefit. Our team is entrepreneurial by nature, mission-driven, and focused on doing things right and delivering great customer outcomes. We promise competitive compensation, work-life flexibility, and benefits including equity options.
