Ideon is the product of years of support, investment, and knowledge translation within the Canadian innovation ecosystem. Our story begins with a curious Canadian geophysicist working in the uranium fields of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, travels through the academic universe at TRIUMF (Canada’s national particle physic lab), continues with field-trials in partnership with industry, and then into commercialization with the world’s largest and most innovative mining companies. We’re building a great company that delivers meaningful impact on the world.
Ideon Technologies uses the energy from supernova explosions to image down to 1km beneath the Earth’s surface. A spin-off from TRIUMF (Canada’s particle physics lab), Ideon is a world pioneer in cosmic-ray muon tomography. The team developed a subsurface intelligence platform that integrates proprietary detectors, imaging systems, inversion technologies, and artificial intelligence to provide x-ray-like visibility underground. By transforming muon data into reliable 3D density maps, Ideon helps geologists identify, characterize, and monitor mineral deposits with confidence. This reduces risk and cost of traditional methods, while saving time, optimizing return, and minimizing environmental impact across the mining value chain. In turn, this is helping accelerate the world’s transition to low- impact mining and transform how companies find the critical minerals required to power the global shift to clean energy.
The Ideon Culture
Our values represent the beliefs, philosophies, and principles that drive our business. They describe what we stand for, shape our behaviour, and inform our decisions. We use them to determine if we are on the right path to fulfilling our ambitious goals without compromising what’s important to us.
CEO & Co-Founder (& Director)
Gary has been CEO at Ideon since March 2020, joining the team just as the global pandemic took hold. He has led Ideon through a relaunch of the company and the transition from R&D to early commercialization, through to a successful Series A raise in 2022.
He is a visionary with strong operational credentials and a track record of building teams that deliver extraordinary results. Prior to joining Ideon, Gary spent 25 years providing mining equipment, technology, and services in support of the global mining industry, including over 20 years at Finning International.

Earth X-Ray for Low-Impact Mining
Led by Ideon in partnership with the Digital Supercluster (DIGITAL), Simon Fraser University (SFU), Dias Geophysical, Microsoft, Fireweed Metals, and Mitacs, the Earth X-ray for Low-Impact Mining project is enabling mining companies to identify density and magnetic anomalies with greater resolution and certainty down to 1 km beneath the Earth’s surface.
Ideon gratefully acknowledges the support of the following organizations as well as the numerous mining companies that have contributed significantly to advances in the application of muon tomography, including commercial field trials.
